Mayor leading Piha tribute to veterans

Len Brown will pay tribute to veterans from every war at an Anzac ceremony at Piha tomorrow.

It's one of almost a dozen events being held across Auckland's western towns and suburbs to mark the centenary of the Anzac landing at Gallipoli.

The Auckland mayor will speak at Lion Rock at 2pm, on the sacrifice and courage of servicemen and servicewoman past and present.

His speech will focus in particular on the cost New Zealand paid in World War I.

“Nearly 100,000 young New Zealand men and women shipped out to serve in World War I," he says.

"That’s almost as many as the population of Auckland, which had a population of 133,000 with nearly every family affected by the war."

Len Brown says Gallipoli is one of the most important events in our military history.

“Gallipoli in particular introduced our young, idealistic country to the realities of modern warfare," he says.

"Let us take pause, on the centenary of the first Gallipoli landings, to remember all those who have served New Zealand in conflict and in peace-keeping.”

West Auckland's dawn service will start at 6am at Waikumete Centenary in Glen Eden, regardless of weather conditions.

It will begin with a parade from the cenotaph.
