Cars causing an eyesore on Auckland's waterfront could finally be covered up.

Ports of Auckland has unwrapped its draft 30-year master plan, including a five-storey parking building topped with a one-hectare waterfront park.

Chief Executive Tony Gibson said the proposed building kills two birds with one stone.

"What we're saying is actually people don't like the sight of them but we still have to actually ensure that we can ensure that the freight demands, not only around cars, are met."

Gibson said they'll be able to cram all incoming vehicles in there, allowing for more shipping room, and a large green-space.

"The public can go there at lunch time and enjoy lunch and an outlook over the harbour. It does open up the port in a way it hasn't been opened up before."

The proposed building won't block any views as it'll be in front of a supermarket and carpark.

The plan also includes a new engineering workshop and head office and the removal of Marsden Wharf.
