Tom Abercrombie racing against time to be fit

Tom Abercrombie is touch and go to be fit for the start of the Australian basketball league season.

The Sky City Breakers' swingman is still battling the ankle injury picked up in last season's semi-final series against Townsville.

Abercrombie had surgery during the off-season, but Breakers coach Andrej Lemanis says they're not sure whether he'll be available to take on Perth in the season opener in four weeks.

"The medical staff are hopeful and think that he is going to be alright. It's one of those things that how it responds to actual load will ultimately determine when he comes back."

Tom Abercrombie will travel with the team but won't play in the upcoming three pre-season games in Christchurch, Dunedin and Hamilton.
