Banks' future in John Key's hands - MPs

By: Felix Marwick | Latest Political News | Thursday September 13 2012 15:12

One of John Bank's ministerial colleagues says the ACT MPs political future is in the Prime Minister's hands.

Opposition parties are adamant just released police files prove Mr Banks misled the public and the Prime Minister about his knowledge of Mayoral campaign donations he received from Kim Dotcom and SkyCity.

Opposition parties are demanding Mr Banks be sacked after he refused to allow his statement to police to be released.

United Future MP Peter Dunne says Mr Banks' future as a Minister is for the Prime Minister to decide.

He says he's surprised Mr Banks' statement to police hasn't been released.

"Well I would have assumed that all of the material that the police had, had been put into the public arena. I wasn't aware until just half an hour ago that his statement hadn't been released. You'd have to ask him why he didn't do that."

Green Party Co-Leader Russel Norman says Mr Banks should resign, and if the Prime Minister has any credibility he'd sack him.

"So far the Prime Minister hasn't shown that he's got the spine to stand up to John Banks, so I'd doubt it."

And John Key is retaining John Banks as a Minister.

Mr Key says he won't be sacking Mr Banks.

"This is a politically motivated attack from Labour. And really where they should have put their political energies was changing the law. It's a very, very broad and unworkable law, and that's why the government is changing it now."
