Battle lines drawn over plain packaging for tobacco

Related

New legislation cracking down on the tobacco industry is set to go before Parliament for the first time this week.

MPs will tomorrow debate the first reading of a Bill that introduces plain packaging rules for tobacco and cigarettes.

Designed specifically as a means to further reduce smoking rates, the Bill will require health warning messages on tobacco products to be made more noticeable.

It'll also ban the sale of loose cigarettes and substantially increase fines for those who break smoking advertising laws.

Manufacturers in breach will see their fines raised from $50,000 to $600,000.

For retailers the increase is from $10,000, to $200,000.
