Inquiry into Jones' decision by Auditor-General

By: Katie Bradford-Crozier | Latest Political News | Wednesday May 30 2012 16:47

The Auditor-General has decided to carry out an inquiry into the decision of Labour MP and former associate immigration minister Shane Jones to grant citizenship to William Yan.

The Chinese businessman, who's also known as Bill Liu, was cleared of immigration fraud charges last week.

Labour asked Lyn Provost to consider an inquiry because of allegations made about Mr Jones' actions.

Francis Cooke QC will lead the inquiry.

It'll look at how and why Mr Jones decided to grant citizenship, plus any other matters deemed relevant.

Mr Jones insists he's done nothing wrong.

Labour leader David Shearer says it's important Mr Jones is given the opportunity to clear his name, and that Kiwis are assured the correct departmental and ministerial processes were followed.
