Terrorism expert says Key's Al Qaeda claims "Ludicrous"

Terrorism expert says Key's Al Qaeda claims

A former US national intelligence officer is rubbishing claims from the Prime Minister about terrorism being the reason we need to pass the GCSB amendment bill.

John Key says we need the changes because New Zealanders are being trained by Al Qaeda and we're being cyber hacked to steal information about weapons of mass destruction.

But former CIA terrorism expert Glenn Carle says the WMD talk was a silly claim which doesn't mean a lot but will scare many.

"The thought that some individuals in a mountain someplace here are playing with or developing a nuclear weapon is really just frankly ludicrous."

Mr Carle says the claims about Kiwis being trained by Al Qaeda in Yemen are more plausible but he doesn't think it will ever pose a risk to New Zealand.
