Student almost smuggled cockroach into NZ

By: Newstalk ZB staff | New Zealand News | Tuesday March 5 2013 13:11

A Christchurch international student who tried to smuggle food into the country almost introduced another unwanted visitor into the country.

Quarantine officials found dried kumara and pork-filled buns hidden in two large bags of tea when the Burnside High School student's baggage was inspected.

The 16-year-old arrived at Christchurch International airport from China on Friday.

The Ministry of Primary Industries says when a more in depth inspection was carried out a cockroach escaped from the bag and ran across the search bench, before being captured.

The passenger was younger than 17 so no legal action can be taken.
