We already have a Children's Commissioner, but the Government's new Children's Director promises she has a different job.
Sue Mackwell has been appointed to the role created on the back of a recommendation in the White Paper for Vulnerable Children.
She will be monitoring and driving changes to ensure children are doing well in New Zealand.
"My immediate priority will be the establishment of the new children's teams and two of those are going to be up and running by October, one in Rotorua and one in Whangarei."
Ms Mackwell says the focus of the role is children who are facing the risk of harm from abuse.
