Antarctic blast set to hit New Zealand

We know it's wet - now brace yourself for the cold.

WeatherWatch analyst Philip Duncan says a major winter storm is about to roar across New Zealand, due to hit in about 36 hours.

"A big high out to the west over Tasmania, a big low over the country, and together they've worked to suck up air right out of Antarctica.

"In fact it's coming out of Scott Base."

Philip Duncan says the temperature is due to drop to -40 degrees celcius at Scott Base, but obviously it is not going to get that cold here.

He says wind chill factors will make it feel like between -5 and -15 in the deep south, and farmers need to move their stock.
