Mystery car found buried in sand

Mystery surrounds the discovery of a car found at Papamoa Beach near the Kaituna River mouth.

The car doesn't have any number plates and because it is partially buried in sand, the vehicle can't be traced using serial numbers in the engine bay until its recovered.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council Pollution Prevention Team Leader Steve Pickles says the vehicle appears to be a Mitsubishi RVR wagon.

He says it is important that abandoned vehicles are removed quickly from beaches because fuel, oil and battery acid pose a pollution risk.
