NZ soldier in Afghanistan taken to hospital

A New Zealand soldier injured in Afghanistan is being airlifted to a hospital in Germany for further treatment.

The Defence Force says the man was hit in the eye during a live firing practice at a range in Bamiyan.

They say an unknown object, possibly a ricochet, penetrated his protective eyewear and entered his eye.

The soldier, who's serving with the Provincial Reconstruction Team, received initial treatment by colleagues before being airlifted to Bagram Airbase for surgery.

He's in a stable condition and will now be taken to Germany.

An investigation into the incident is underway.
