How the 9/11 attacks changed the world

On September 11, 2001, four planes were hijacked and flown towards targets on the East Coast of the USA.

In an event that has had wide political, international, economic and financial ramifications, two of the planes were crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre in New York, and another plane was crashed into the Pentagon.

The fourth plane crashed into a field, after the hijackers were overpowered by passengers.

In the 15 years that have followed since 9/11, the world has changed dramatically.

Wars in the immediate aftermath of the attacks continue to affect geopolitics, particularly in the Middle East and Central Asia.

In the Western world, Islamophobia is far more prevalent, and further terrorist attacks have been carried out by decentralised networks of Islamic terrorist groups, despite heightened security measures.
