Bridges talks supporting Govt while still holding it to account

From questioning community newspapers decisions to police pulling over drivers, the opposition leader says he’s on the case in his new role.

Simon Bridges is chairing the Epidemic Response Committee, which allows the Opposition to scrutinise the Government’s COVID-19 response while Parliament’s not in session during lockdown.

He says the Government’s all in this together, but he’ll be asking the questions Kiwis want answered and helping solve problems.

"Questions on borders and quarantining, on fingerprint test tracing - can we use the apps that they're using in Singapore - through to truck drivers not being able to use public toilets and young mums about to go into hospital and worried their partners not going to be able to be with them."

Another matter high on his agenda is supermarket pricing. He says supermarkets are making more money at this time and he’ll be questioning any cancelled specials and pricing.

Bridges says he is trying not to think towards the election at the moment as the focus is on the lockdown and the health and wellbeing of New Zealanders.

He says that it is currently too soon to say, but in a month or two it will be clearer.
