The new non-emergency police phone number is proving to be popular, though there are doubts over its benefit.Â
The 105 number went live yesterday and nearly 1,000 calls had been received between 10am yesterday and 6am today.
This number is a new way to report stolen cars, burglaries and other non-emergencies, rather than the 111 number being used for these matters.
The intention is for it to be used when people need contact with police but there's no immediate threat to life or property.
TVNZ reporter Mark Crysell joined The Weekend Collective to discuss the new number, and what the point is on splitting the numbers up.Â
