As the debate rages over whether it counts as a sport or not, there is no denying that e-sports is huge and it’s only getting bigger.

Now one of our universities is in on the action.  This week, Waikato University opened its own Esports arena – a suite of 12 top of the line gaming computers, making it the first university to have a dedicated space on campus for competitive gaming.

They are also the first and only university in New Zealand to give a scholarship for Esports, with the first recipient this year.

Waikato University Esports co-ordinator Tom Featonby joined Andrew Dickens to discuss the rise of the new type of sport and how the sport will suit into the rest of the campus.
