A new study shows that parents have a two-year window where they can influence their children's taste in music.

The study, from the University of York, shows that kids aged between 8 and 10 can be influenced by music their parents like.

The research found that it is because children of that age are old enough to appreciate lyrics and tunes, but are young enough not to be embarassed by what their parents like.,

However, Dr Michelle Dickinson told Francesca Rudkin that there is a trick to getting your children on board.

"The secret is to play it in the background at home so they don't even notice that they are listening to it, and they will slowly get used to it."

The research also shows that having a wider taste of music helps children to handle their emotions and socialise with people more.

"It actually allows children when they are in that pre-teen, teenager age, where they are trying t deal with all these hormones and emotions, to realise they can process some of them through music, and there are different types of music."

Dickinson says that the study found that if you bounce seven-month-olds to a certain tune or rhythm, the toddler will prefer that song.
