Local travel is beginning to pick up again.

A recent survey on domestic tourism by the Rutherford Group shows 72 percent of people will be trading their international holidays for domestic itineraries over the next six to 12 months.

Travel blogger Megan Singleton told Francesca Rudkin people are turning their minds to supporting the local economy while overseas travel is banned.

"If the trans-Tasman bubble, 43 per cent would still holiday in New Zealand, 25 per cent would holiday in both, and only 14 per cent plan to go to Australia."

The focus on domestic travel has seen a boost in Air New Zealand's bookings.

The airline is increasing its operations by nearly a hundred flights over Queen's Birthday weekend due to a surge in demand.

There will be extra flights to and from Blenheim, Gisborne, Kerikeri, Napier and Nelson.

However, Aviation Commentator Peter Reynolds says it could still be a long time before domestic flights return to normal capacity.

"It's only using a small number of aircraft, nowhere near a return of normal operations."
