What You Wish For by Catherine Robertson. NZ fiction set in a small coastal community named Gabriel’s Bay (which is also the title of her last book; this one is a continuation of that story). Really charming writing – poignant and funny and a nice way to spend a few hours.

Maid by Stephanie Land. Nonfiction – her memoir of being the working poor in the US – IN Washington State, home to some really affluent people and companies, but not her. At 19 she left an abusive relationship and ended up with her toddler living in a homeless shelter, cleaning peoples’ houses to try and make a living but really hard, hardscrabble stuff. It’s a good insight into extreme poverty and a way of life that affects many, many people – here as well as there.
