Their lives are strictly controlled, even when transplanted to the US, where their activities are entirely circumscribed and the new cultural mores of America don’t apply. Teenaged Isra is despatched to Brooklyn in an arranged marriage, where her new life, living with the in-laws, is a misery. At the age of 18, her own daughter faces a similar fate but is no longer prepared to accept the traditional ways, and her rebellion has far reaching consequences for the entire family.
