Madhouse at the End of the Earth by Julian Sancton. True story.  In 1897 the Belgica set sail from Belgium for Antarctica, with dreams of exploration glory and charting areas unknown to man. The journey had many low points – they spent almost a year stuck in pack ice whilst battling scurvy, ill health and madness and theirs is a story that NASA studies today in its research on isolation for missions to Mars.
