We Were Never Here by Andrea Bartz. Emily is traumatised after she and her friend Kristen killed a man who attacked her on a recent Cambodian holiday. They go on another trip, to Chile, where – unbelievably - they leave behind another victim. Terrified of being arrested, Emily can’t understand Kristen’s blasé approach to these events, nor her obsessive approach to their friendship. Something is clearly not quite right, and it’s time for Emily to take charge. 

After the Tampa by Abbas Nazari. Someone who has first hand experience of life under the Taliban. He and his family fled Afghanistan and were on the sinking ship which was rescued by The Tampa, and eventually resettled in New Zealand. He’s an extraordinary young man and is a fine example of what great value refugees can bring to a country like ours – he was even awarded a Fulbright scholarship. (Perhaps all Australians should read it).
