A busy time at the polls in the lead up to Election Day with more people expected to cast their vote this weekend.

Already more than 585,000 people have cast their votes.

New Zealand Herald reporter Jason Walls told Francesca Rudkin this year has been a stark contrast to other years.

"We've seen every single election period for the past number of elections has been steadily increasing this early voting trend, but this it has just been on steroids really."

The surge for people to cast their votes comes after a rocky week for the National Party, with leader Judith Collins dealing with leaks from her own caucus, troublesome MPs and a walkabout that saw accusations of planted party members.

Meanwhile, Jacinda Ardern has stressed repeatedly she is not taking anything for granted, as polling suggests the election is Labour's to lose.
