Sunday Panel: Are we obsessed with public shaming?

Two incidents this week have raised eyebrows about snap reactions and 'trial by media'.

While the 'unruly tourists' have earned multiple headlines across dozens of local and international websites for their bad behaviour, there was a similar case after a mother was photographed with her baby sitting on her lap while driving down Auckland's motorway.

Both incidents sparked outrage, with social media comments slamming the mother and the family.

Was it all too much though?

Media commentator Irene Gardiner and lawyer Liam Hehir joined Francesca Rudkin to share their thoughts, and both were in agreement about the dangers of 'the digital mob'.

Gardiner says that she felt uneasy by the whole situation, particularly the driver.

"It worried me that the people who saw the woman driving, if that was me, I'd go to the police because that's the logical thing to do.

"It worries me that that's happening more and more."

She thinks people should be weary of bringing down hatred on people that may not deserve.

Though he is not a fan of mob mentality, Hehir says he can see the justification for sharing.

"Apart from the shaming aspect of it, it's such an astonishing sight. If you saw that, you'd want to tell people."
