It seems New Zealanders still don’t know what can and can’t be recycled.

Spot checking of recycling bins in Christchurch this week revealed that some people have no idea, or are just plain lazy.

Items found in the spot check included dirty nappies accounting for 8 percent of contamination – with 63 percent coming from soft plastic.

EcoCentral take care of the recycling for the Christchurch City Council, dealing with 1000 tonnes of residential recycling a week. CEO Craig Downie joined Andrew Dickens to discuss why people get so confused, what the common misconceptions are, and what can be done better.
