A study from the Netherlands has shown an increase in divorces because of online dating relationships, specifically on apps like Tinder and Bumble.
The study also suggests that over half of the apps users are already in a relationship and posing as single.
Emily McLean from Matchstick Dating told Kerre McIvor that the ‘gamification’ of the apps gives people a rush.
“If people don’t feel validated in their own relationship or like they are getting the attention and affection that they want, it’s so easy to set up a wee profile and get an ego boost and chat with a few good looking people.”
McLean says she knows of multiple examples of people finding their partners on apps, leading to a break down in relationships.
However, she says it's a definite sign that something is wrong.
"New Zealand is just too small for this."
