The awards season has begun, but it's already clouded by controversy.

The Golden Globe nominations came out this week, the first of the big film awards to make their picks ahead of the Oscars in February.

While the awards proved good for such films as A Star is Born, Green Book, Vice and Black Panther, all eyes were on another awards ceremony.

The Oscars announced the host for their 2019 ceremony last week, with comedian Kevin Hart earning the top job.

However, Hart quit only a few days later, after controversial homophobic jokes came back to haunt him.

Hart initially refused to apologise for his past jokes, where he had suggested he would beat up his toddler son if ever showed homosexual tendencies.

He took to Instagram to denounce his critics, writing that nothing would ruin his happiness.

A few hours later, he resigned from the role, saying he did not want to be a distraction. Only then did he apologise.
