Martin Devlin: The joys and fiendish lows of this weekend's sport

Three stand-out sporting moments from the weekend for me, two joyous and one fiendishly disastrous.

Cricket to start with and the Black Caps blitzing the Windies by an innings and plenty on the back of a stunning captain's knock from Kane Williamson.

His new highest test score took almost two full playing days to complete, a remarkable effort of concentration, determination and brilliant skill. The man could've taught Kreskin a thing or two about mind control.

His discipline, technique and ability born from hours of practice is inspirational to watch. And the greatest thing about our greatest ever test batsman is we've still got years of this to go.

On to Australia where a reworked pre-match  national anthem delighted a watching sporting world. The inclusion of Aboriginal elders, culture, song and celebration as part of the Wallaby test ritual is something I both enjoy and hope they continue with.

Why? Not sure really. It just feels to me like the right thing to do. And for the  first time probably ever I enjoyed Advance Australia Fair.

And then there's Reece Hodge. The poor bloke. The Wallaby kicker who should be still drinking in his third test win this season, all by way of him converting a  last minute pressure kick.

Yet instead will be kicking himself for a third consecutive miss. Whoever said lightning doesn't strike twice was clearly wrong. Same with whatever idiot invented third time lucky.
