Martin Devlin: Stronger actions needed to deal with racist football "fans"

The football world has rightly reacted with disgust and outrage following the offensive chanting and antics seen in Sofia yesterday at the Bulgaria vs England world cup qualifier.

No-one in their right mind can even comprehend why in the year 2019 this kind of thing still goes on, which is why it's important to at least correctly identify and label those involved as the thugs and crims they truly are.

Let's make this perfectly clear - football fans they are not and it is lazy and wrong for us media types to continually categorise them as such.

These goons don't go to the game to watch. In fact, they don't attend the match to appreciate anything about the sport. They are there to do nothing but offend, disrupt and create chaos.

Which, on reflection, they achieved in spades. Nazi salutes and monkey noises make instant global headlines and these creeps both know and understand that.

They are fully aware of what they're doing, the consequences of those actions and the fallout both domestically and internationally that will result.

So it's all well and good for the Bulgarian FA President to resign but really it resolves nothing and achieves even less. The only way to deal with these crims is to prosecute using the full force of the law.

The technology available these days means they can all be photographed upon entering the arena then those pics used to identify, bring charges against and name and shame for future reference. Then stadia-wide bans can be brought to bear as well as international travel restrictions.

These are the measures that will stop this trash - not resignations by administrative officials.

Not huffing and puffing via incredibly worthy personal social media postings. You have to deal with these men in the only way they respect which is with extreme measures. Make it impossible for them to attend matches and that's any matches in any country.

Only then will they emerge from behind their face scarves, remove the hoodies that conceal their identities and let the world know who they really are.

They want moral outrage, they want global publicity, their motivation is to offend so the best weapon available to the sport is to "out" them and let them truly have it.

Isolate, individualise, prosecute, restrict their travel, incarcerate and issue life bans.

But let's also acknowledge who these people actually are which is racist crims and thugs who've NEVER been football fans.
