Martin Devlin: Nothing beats the vibe of live sport

There's something about live sport. There's something about it you've simply got to be there to feel. It's more than the actual game, it's the occasion, the event.

It's the walk-up, the crowd, the buzz, the vibe, the collectiveness of it all, the emotional connection it brings. The bringing together of all these people all of them happy to be where they are having gone there to have fun and having it!

It's infectious is what it is and so very easy to get utterly caught up in it. You get this feeling going to live sport that is hard to replicate anywhere else other than maybe your favourite band playing.

But then concerts normally provide an inevitable script of sorts where you know what you're going to hear and you know it'll be great. With sport, you don't.

And most of the time we still believe there is no Lance Armstrong involved and the result is as pure and clean as was ever intended.

So the anticipation is mixed with both nervousness and excitement to produce something else entirely – unless it's your own stupid dumb team providing half of the spectacle.

There's something about live sport, something about a packed out stadium, the buzz of the crowd and being part of that crowd.

As a dear friend texted me afterwards, "Live sport is awesome. Makes me happy". You either get it or you don't and if you don't there's nothing I can say that will ever make you.

Eden Park yesterday afternoon is as good as it gets.
