All Black captain Sam Cane has gone through the highs and lows in his first year in the coveted role.Â
This week, Cane received double recognition at the New Zealand Rugby awards - claiming the Kelvin R Tremain Memorial honour for overall player of the year, and the All Black of the year title.
Cane played all six tests with distinction in his challenging debut season as All Blacks captain, leading the team to a 50 per cent win record which included locking away the Bledisloe Cup and Tri Nations titles.
But Cane also had to endure many weeks away from his family after the All Blacks temporarily moved to Australia for the Tri-Nations Cup, while he also sparked controversy with comments about All Blacks fans.Â
He joined Martin Devlin to reflect on that controversy, the struggles of being based overseas, and his hopes for next year.Â
