Outgoing Black Caps coach Mike Hesson believes his successor should have strong New Zealand ties.
The country's longest serving coach will officially give up the role at the end of this month, to spend more time with his family.
Hesson says he didn't see the role as a job, as he loves New Zealand cricket at all levels.
He told Martin Devlin it's something he thinks the next coach will need.
"I think its always a preference, without doubt. I think someone who has an affinity with New Zealand [and[ with skin in the game is important when you do a role like this."
