A former coach of the Springboks believes the chances of this year's tour by the British and Irish Lions proceeding as planned are minimal.

Covid infection rates remain high in South Africa and there's no vaccine rollout schedule.

Heyneke Meyer, who coached the 'Boks to the 2015 World Cup, told Martin Devlin it would require a pretty rapid turnaround for the tour to be held in South Africa.

"At this stage in lockdown, we can't sell any liquor, bars closed, everything's closed.

"I can't see these people coming down, touring the country, and being in such close contact."

One option is for the tour to move to the United Kingdom, but it's thought rugby bosses there are cooling on the idea given the prospect of full stadia is unlikely.
