Neil Wagner's replacement for the second cricket test against Pakistan appears a straight choice between Daryl Mitchell and Matt Henry.

New Zealand coach Gary Stead has told the DRS the Black Caps are again likely to play three seamers alongside spinner Mitchell Santner.

Stead says it will be a tough choice between allrounder Mitchell and Henry for the third seamer's spot.

"If Matt Henry plays with us, we'll ask him to do the best Matt Henry job he can do, and we know he's also been very successful here at Hagley."

Stead expects plenty of bounce in the Hagley Oval pitch in Christchurch, where the second test begins tomorrow.

But Stead says after having his first look at the pitch, it's not as green as the one used last summer on the ground against India.

"Probably describe it as less grassy then wickets I've seen here in the past, just in terms of the Indian test match we played last year which did plenty and was very, very quick."

"I still expect it to be a good pacy, bouncy wicket."
