It's been revealed there were calls to see fighters spar in controlled conditions - before a charity boxing bout turned fatal.
37-year-old Kain Parsons died in hospital today, after being critically injured at the Christchurch fight at the weekend.
One of the boxers on the card, Aragorn Urquhart, told Sportstalk his trainer wanted the amateur boxers to match up ahead of time.
"That was something that he really wanted when people were being brought in. He was like, 'We need to see them in the ring together, is this actually a fair match up?' Because on paper, you can't always tell."Â
However, Urquhat says that people who fight in these matches pick up the gloves for a good reason.
He says they were both there to help others.
"Kain was actually fighting for the same charity that I was fighting for.T hat was a huge driver for us, raising money for a bunch of people that were looking after a bunch of amazing little kids."
