Crusaders coach Scott Robertson has admitted to shedding tears after missing out on the All Blacks top job.

Robertson played 23 international matches for the All Blacks, before moving into an illustrious coaching career. His tenure as Canterbury's head coach he lead to team to win the Final in the Premiership Division of the ITM Cup in 2013, before joining the Crusaders in 2016, and going on to achieve three straight Super Rugby titles.

His track record made him the favourite amongst many commentators to replace Steve Hansen after he announced he would be stepping down last year. However, the job ended up going to Ian Foster.

Talking to Simon Barnett and Phil Gifford, Robertson says that he was invested deeply in the idea, and he was living the idea as it was "like an election" due to how public the discussion was.

He says when he got the phone call, his wife saw his face and gave him a hug.

"The kids came in and we just lay on the bed for half an hour. Not much was said.

"It was an emotional half an hour, and then got up, went for a swim, and just started to think what a player would do."

He joined Simon and Phil to talk about missing out on the All Blacks Head Coach role, his coaching ethos, what he gets up to off the field, and more.
