BOB’S BEST BUYS

Wine: Giesen Pure Light Sauvignon Blanc $10.99

Why I chose it:

Lower alcohol wines is a new and rapidly growing category. As far as I can tell NZ leads the way. The wine industry has funded a program with a $17m investment to develop and market low alcohol wines an we are now seeing the results with some very good wines. The challenge is to pick the grapes early with lower sugar levels but ripe flavours. In a recent comparative tasting I preferred one or two low alcohol wines to the same wines with regular alcohol levels. We’ve come a long way in a short time.

What does it taste like?

It tasted like fresh, punchy Sauvignon Blanc – perhaps a little lighter in body but with a lovely touch of sweetness balanced by fruity acidity that gives the wine a delicious sweet/sour tension.

Why it’s a bargain:

I’d be quite happy to pay $15-20 for a wine of this quality which makes its price of $10.99 look pretty good.

Where you can buy it?

I could only find it at New World where it is available at the remarkable price of $10.99. It might pop up at other outlets shortly.

Food match?

Perfect with crunchy summer salads and fresh seafood. Great with Feta cheese. Giesen recommends Vietnamese Spring Rolls which seems pretty good to me.

Will it keep?

I recommend enjoying it over summer and in the year ahead.
