Over in the UK, household energy prices will rise by 13 percent a year in July, as soaring wholesale costs caused by the impact of the Iran war hit bills for the first time.
Energy costs have jumped as a result of Iran blocking the crucial Strait of Hormuz shipping route - where a fifth of the world's oil and gas is carried.
UK correspondent Gavin Grey says even if the Strait was unblocked tomorrow, this conflict would still leave a significant economic impact.
LISTEN ABOVE

Accountants are hopeful the Government will use the Budget to do something about the secret little wealth tax those with offshore investments are currently paying.
As it stands, most people with more than $50,000 directly invested in assets offshore, including shares in companies listed on stock exchanges, need to pay tax on a portion of the value of their investments, regardless of if they receive income from those investments.
Those who invest in shares in New Zealand companies or New Zealand-domiciled funds only need to pay tax on the income they receive from their investments.
NZ Herald Wellington business editor Jenee Tibshraeny explained further.
LISTEN ABOVE

Well, that Official Cash Rate decision is probably one of those moments where you find out whether you're a glass half-full or glass half-empty person.
Because on the bright side, the Official Cash Rate didn’t go up. On the downside, it looks like it’s definitely going up next time. So yes, it’s a reprieve - but it’s only a reprieve for six weeks, excuse me, before the screws on the economy start turning again.
Thanks to the new transparency rules at the Reserve Bank - which, frankly, we should all love - we know that the committee voted and it was split right down the middle. Three members of the committee wanted the OCR to stay at 2.25 percent. Three of them voted for it to be raised by 25 basis points immediately to calm down inflation pressures.
But Anna Breman, who is the governor, has a casting vote. She said it needs to stay, so it stays put.
But they didn’t hide the fact that it is going to go up sooner than they had thought just three months ago. And it will go up by more than they thought just three months ago.
Much of it appears to hinge on what businesses do with prices from here on in. Because what the Iran war is doing to prices is so widespread - and so many prices are going up, from fuel to fertiliser to food - that it runs a higher risk that businesses start jacking up more prices in a second round of increases. And that is what they’re worried about at the Reserve Bank.
So economists are now calling for three hikes in quick succession from here: July, September and October.
Now, there are two problems with that. The first: all three hikes are before the election in November. National, especially, should be sweating, because poorer voters are not happier voters - they are voters who turn to New Zealand First.
The second problem - and this is probably the biggest of them all - is what this is going to do to our recovery, our economic recovery.
We are probably in negative growth this quarter. Next quarter is probably not that flash but at least positive. Entire sectors, like construction, are still struggling to get back on their feet. Unemployment is still in the fives. The Iran war is still pushing up fuel prices and therefore pushing up the price of everything.
So, glass half full: at least we get another six weeks before the screws start turning.
Glass half empty: when they tighten, they will be tightening fast on an economy that doesn’t need that kind of pressure.
LISTEN ABOVE

Wellington's mayor is talking up cost savings, as the council chases a lower 5.8 percent rates rise.
It proposed 7.4 percent during public consultation.
Some fees and user charges are increasing and big projects like the Town Hall and refurbishing the Botanic Gardens' Begonia House will continue.
Andrew Little says they made cuts to keep rates down.
"Finding savings isn't an annual activity, it's a daily activity - so they carried on working, they found these projects that aren't going to be finished, that don't have to be depreciated , so we could donate to budget for that."
LISTEN ABOVE

A suggestion Kiwi drivers should focus on themselves, with the myth blaming foreign drivers for our worst crashes busted.
Ministry of Transport data shows overseas drivers were involved in only 18 of New Zealand’s 292 road deaths in 2024.
Of 2400 crashes resulting in serious injuries, only about 100 involved overseas drivers.
Automobile Association safety spokesperson, Dylan Thomsen, says he'd love Kiwis to keep safer following distances.
"It means that when somebody does something in front of you that you weren't expecting, you've actually got more time to react to it."
LISTEN ABOVE

Former Minister Peter Dunne says it's time to look at MP allowances.
NZ First MP Andy Foster's claiming a $36,000 accommodation allowance for the Wellington family home he bought 26 years ago.
He's moved to the Wairarapa, but lives in the capital when Parliament sits.
Dunne says MPs should be reasonable.
"Fair enough if you're required to commute to Wellington each week to get some accommodation, to get some recompense for that, but not fair enough to simply turn your own home into your home away from home in Wellington when you've lived there for most of your life."
National's Louise Upston’s also claiming the allowance for her Wellington property.
LISTEN ABOVE

Have you done the sums yet to work out how much more you're going to have to pay, how much more you're going to have to find to pay the rates bill? We were talking before the show, for some of my colleagues it's an extra $45 per fortnight, they're in an apartment out of the main city. I can't even imagine how much the increase will be for people living in the leafy suburbs.
Auckland Council has locked in a 7.9% rates rise, according to Wayne Brown it's to fund the City Rail Link. They've managed to keep everything else, they've managed to cut costs and reduce spending and keep everything level, this is purely to fund the City Rail Link. He's unapologetic. He said we've got this railway, if we don't pay for it this year, then we're just going to have to pay for it next year. And that's quite true, you can't just keep deferring essential spending. And that's what a lot of councils are finding around the country, that they might have deferred spending, put off investing in the vital infrastructure that needs to be spent, Moa Point anybody, and now they're going to have to, now they're going to have to do it. It's this lot of ratepayers that is going to have to pay because previous years' ratepayers didn't want to. Councillors didn't want to because they might get voted out, ratepayers didn't want to because they said we've got nothing extra in our pockets. Well now we're just going to have to find it.
In effect, the rates increase is only an average, many Aucklanders will face an effective rate rise of between 12% and 15%. But pity the people of Waitaki, councillors there were looking at rates increases of up to 45%. Eventually they opted for a 22% rates rise because they've got to fund their three water scheme. Now that's been put off, put off, put off, they can't put it off any longer and now the people of Oamaru and the surrounding districts are going to have to find the money and pay for it.
Many, many people are doing what the councils around the country are doing and what the Government is doing. They're looking at the bills, they're slashing what is not essential, trying not to slash everything that's not essential because you need something that's a bit of a morale booster. But when you've got a finite amount of money coming in, it has to cover so many, many increases. Fuel, insurance, rates. When there's two of you working, it's tough enough, if you're on a fixed income with very little in the way of other money coming in, you've already pared down the spending to the bone, it's even harder.
Is this the time you look at selling the house if you have one? You're told when you go into retirement that you have to have a house, that this is one way that you'll be able to ensure a comfortable retirement, you have your own home, you have a roof over your head. But how do you make economies to cover the rates bill to pay for the house when you're already stretched so very thin? If your rates bill has come in, have you crunched the numbers, where are you at? I mean Auckland like Rotorua, and number of other councils around the country, even the Far North, they're trying to keep it into single digits, just skimming the 10%, but other councils, they're having to pay for that work that they deferred for so long and those rates increases are going to hurt.

Fear the cost of living crisis may be getting worse for Aucklanders following the super city's largest ever rates increase.
The 7.9% rise will see the average ratepayer's bill increase by $320 a year.
The Auckland Ratepayer's Alliance says the council's budget is bloated and it needs to focus on cutting costs, and they already hear from people on fixed incomes and pensioners struggling to make ends meet.
Age Brightly’s Hannah McQueen joined Kerre Woodham to discuss some of the options available for those on fixed incomes, who might struggle with the increase.
LISTEN ABOVE

Labour Leader Chris Hipkins joins Nick Mills in the studio, on the eve of one of the biggest days in the political year: Budget Day.
With the budget looming, Nick asks if we can finally expect policy from Labour for this coming election.
Hipkins shares his predictions for the budget, Labour's priorities and his thoughts on the pre-budget announcements so far.
With the 8700 jobs cut announcement, we find out if Labour would reinstate some of these and what difference he thinks AI can make in the public sector.
Hipkins says Labour will look into regulation and the future of AI, and he wants to focus on growing productivity of employees, not replacing them.
Also, does Hipkins think that New Zealand is ready to trust a Labour government and he gives his thoughts on the leaked "duck faced horse" audio from the Labour conference.
LISTEN ABOVE

Let this be a lesson to all those who argue against the simple truism that the market, most of the time, tends to be right.
Moana Pasifika are in liquidation, the vote was held and the story ends here.
The trouble is the taxpayer footed a lot of the bill and the money is gone, flushed down an ideological toilet.
If the idea was such a sensational one, someone actually using their own money would have thought of it and further put it into practice.
But the idea wasn't a sensational one. It was an artificial one propped up with other people's money.
The most immediate alarm bells should be ringing in the NRL with their PNG venture.
Having been handed millions by the Australian Government, players will live in a compound because it's too unsafe not to, and their pay will be artificially jacked up by tax treatment. Otherwise, if it wasn't, no one would want to play in PNG.
Gosh I wonder why.
The fact this harebrained idea has got as far as it has actually defies what is going on elsewhere in the sport, which is good. And what else it defies is belief.
But back to Moana Pasifika, it was taxpayers’ money through a series of very, very loosely connected organisations to sport i.e. a medical group who, if you join some dots, you can argue if you run around you might be a bit fitter and then not end up dying young. That sort of logic. Anyway, a medical group who ended up in charge of a professional sports team who didn't really attract a crowd and didn't really turn out to be that good.
Which is one of the great ironies – young Pacific kids were supposed to see their heroes and be inspired to be fit and play sport. You know what inspires kids? Winners. You’ve got to win.
And those kids could see their heroes anyway in the Crusaders, the Chiefs, the Hurricanes, the Highlanders, and the Blues.
No one ever watched Lomu or Jones and wondered aloud to themselves, "wouldn't it be cool if they had their own, local team?"
So it ends in liquidation, a bad idea, with easy money, not properly executed and ending in the poor house.
In a world where successful sport is all around us, why would you try and gerrymander it in such an amateurish fashion?

What part of no does the Christchurch City Council not understand?
Because, despite us knowing what the answer would be, councillors yesterday voted in favour of putting another $15 million into the Anglican Cathedral reinstatement project, providing the government came to the party.
And, wouldn’t you know it - within just a few hours of the vote happening - Finance Minister Nicola Willis was already pouring cold water on the idea.
Saying the government has already contributed $25 million to the cathedral and there won’t be any more.
She said there are many pressing infrastructure needs and the cathedral isn’t one of them. She’ll get no argument from me on that one.
Not that anyone should be surprised.
Because she said the exact same thing last year when the people involved in the reinstatement went knocking on the door asking the government to come to their rescue.
Which she reminded us of last night. Saying: “In declining the cathedral’s funding ask, we noted that the requested amount represented a significant contribution for a building that would not be owned by the public, and where public use could be limited due to the cathedral being a private, religious space.”
Which was a polite way of telling the cathedral people, and now the council too, that it was no the first time, it’s no this time and don’t bother asking a third time.
Because, as far as she’s concerned, it is end of story. And fair enough, too. Because it would be obscene, given the state of the country’s finances and the state of our infrastructure, for more taxpayer money to go into it.
I even think it’s obscene that the City Council thought it was ok to ask for it. How more tone deaf could it be?
It’s end of story too as far as Labour is concerned.
Chris Hipkins has previously said that he doesn’t think more taxpayer money should go into the cathedral.
And local Labour MP Tracey McLellan said the same thing last night.
Winston Peters, though, has already pledged $15 million if he’s in the next government.
But I can’t imagine that being one of his non-negotiables in any coalition talks. So I think the cathedral can kiss goodbye to any money coming from any government.
In case you need it, let me remind you of the numbers.
The reinstatement project is $90 million short. They’ve asked for a total of between $40 million and $45 million from ratepayers and taxpayers. And, so far, somewhere around $90 million has been spent.
More numbers for you: when the vote was taken yesterday, 11 councillors and Mayor Phil Mauger voted in favour. Three were against and two abstained.
And there were emotional scenes around the council table, apparently.
One report I’ve seen says Councillor Melanie Coker was fighting back tears.
Saying she was torn about spending the council’s surplus, because of the other things it could be spent on, but said the cathedral is the heart of the city.
She said: “We had an earthquake and it kept us out of the city. It was like a break-up with the city that we knew and we never got it back again, so we need to heal our broken heart.”
Councillor Andrei Moore was very anti.
He told the meeting that he’d done a survey and, of the 1,200 who took part, 91 percent were opposed to the council funding the cathedral.
He said he wasn’t prepared to ignore what the people had said and, if he did, he would be breaching their trust.
He said: “I don’t think we are doing the right thing.”
Never a truer word said.
LISTEN ABOVE

Guest Lyndal Midgley spoke about growing up first on a remote Northland farm before moving to Auckland’s North Shore as a child. While her early years were idyllic, she described her teenage years as deeply turbulent, shaped by family conflict, emotional isolation and a growing mental health struggle. At just 15 years old, she overdosed at a Blue Light disco, an event she says became a turning point in her life.
“I remember the feeling of shame,” she recalled, describing how the incident became widely known at school and church, yet little emotional support followed. Despite the trauma, Midgley completed high school and later studied business and tourism, persevering through academic setbacks to earn two diplomas.
The conversation explored how those early experiences eventually led Midgley toward helping others. After years working in accounting and IT, she unexpectedly became a foster parent after a teenage neighbour asked to live with her and her then-husband. That experience introduced her to the realities of neurodiversity, youth trauma and the complexities of New Zealand’s mental health and care systems.
Over time, Midgley became heavily involved in mental health advocacy and education, eventually teaching Mental Health First Aid courses across New Zealand. She explained the training focuses on helping everyday people recognise distress, respond empathetically and safely support someone experiencing a mental health crisis.
“A lot of it is learning how to listen to understand, rather than listening to respond,” she said during the programme.
Midgley also discussed the importance of directly asking someone if they are suicidal when warning signs are present, a conversation many people fear having. She stressed that empathy, calmness and genuine presence can make an enormous difference during moments of crisis.
Alongside her mental health work, Midgley now volunteers as a first responder with ambulance services, motivated in part by gratitude toward the paramedics who saved her life after her teenage overdose.

If the Post is to believed this morning, the Government is considering a business growth fund whereby some Crown agency would pick winners and probably a few losers with financial backing.
Chalmers did this in Australia.
There was apparently a meeting in April between Willis and Chalmers to talk about us joining his fund.
We're talking about minnows, with revenue between one and ten million.
Unless the gas transition guarantor was the start of some kind of paradigm shift in the way this Government thinks about private enterprise, then investment decisions in the private sector should be left to, well, the private sector.
Capital funds and even KiwiSaver. We have about 5% of KiwiSaver funds invested in private equities. The Aussies are apparently more like 15 to 20%.
Fund managers have been making noises about changes needed to help encourage such investments.
So why don't we? If needs be.
The other unusual one this week was the Golden Visa. Apparently, there aren't enough investment opportunities out there to soak up the billions these guys want to pump in to score a bunker in Queenstown with mountain views.
So now you can donate to charity or even help fund a DOC walking trail upgrade.
Erica Stanford told me yesterday they're looking at broadening out the types of investments that qualify.
We ether have too many investment opportunities and not enough capital, or not enough capital and too many opportunities.
Or we have regulatory settings that are stopping one from feeding the other, in which case, the Government ought cut through them before picking its own winners.
