New Zealand could become embroiled in the conflict in Syria.

US President Donald Trump is calling on 'all civilised nations' to oppose the Syrian government, after launching missiles at one of the country's air bases on Friday.

Prime Minister Bill English told Mike Hosking he won't rule out accepting a request to send in New Zealand troops.

"Well look, we would consider it on it's merits, but we would be very cautious," he said.

Mr English said he would prefer a non-violent political solution.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minster is avoiding the blame game for the Edgecumbe floods.

The Bay of Plenty town was completely submerged when a stopbank broke, allowing floodwaters from the Rangitaiki River to flow in.

Mr English said questions need to be answered, but they're focusing on supporting residents.

"When you get that much rain, they're talking about a one in 500 year event, but look they'll be a full look at that in detail whether decisions could have been better done. Already it's too late, they'll learn from it."
