Actor Phil Somerville is moving back to New Zealand after years spent in Los Angeles, but he will be taking a different route - he's coming by boat.

He'll be testing for levels of plastic in the ocean on the wall. He wants to figure out how much of the eight million tonnes of plastic dumped in the ocean is entering the food chain.

The Project, dubbed 'Eat Less Plastic', will see him travel 8,000 nautical miles across the Pacific Ocean for four months.

And for the whole journey, America's Cup skipper Chris Dickson will be by his side.

Somerville and Dickson talked with Mike Hosking about their careers, why they are undertaking the project, and the psychology of being on a boat for so long.
