Mike's Minute: The facts don't lie, we need migrants

The great fraud around migration and migrants appears to have been busted.

One of the tragedies of pre-Covid life was the angst that got propagated over the number of people coming to this country. Migration is the lifeblood of a good economy and country. It brings culture, diversity, skills, investment and labour.

And pre-Covid, we were booming.

The angst was that the migrant was stealing our jobs, buying our houses, and stealing our work. And yet here we are, a year after the border closed, and what a pile of crap that turned out to be.

It's like the argument the last time house prices boomed. It was the foreigners, it was the offshore Asian, and it was those nasty Chinese that were buying up all the homes.

Once again, it was crap. Once the research was done, the offshore buyer turned out to be less than three percent of the market. And of the three percent half of it was Australian.

It's the danger of xenophobia.

By the way, once we banned the foreign buyer and that was done by this government, what exactly has the effect been? That's right, a 25 percent increase in house prices.

That worked a treat then, didn’t it?

The same lie has been exposed over labour. Were they stealing our jobs? Can't have been. Why? Because we now have more people in work than we did pre-Covid, and yet virtually no one has arrived to do it.

Not just that, we also saw what happened at harvest time and the millions upon millions of dollars worth of fruit that got left on the ground.

We have tens of thousands of people out of work. We also have more job ads than we ever have.

So, the upside to this is several fold.

No jobs were stolen, because the locals who could have had them, by in large, didn’t turn up.

We actually have more people working than before, meaning if you want work, it is there.

If you haven't got work, there is no shortage of options.

The foreign arrival didn’t take work, steal your house, or inflate your house price.

And given all the gaps in the economy and our inability to fill them, what we really want are a pile of migrants, and the sooner the better.

We need, this time, to grow up and stop being so insular and welcome them instead of fearing them.
