Mike Hosking: Is Hillary Clinton the best the Democrats have?

Hillary Clinton is back in the news.

There was an interesting piece out of the Wall Street Journal yesterday.

A couple of people who would know – Mark Penn, who’s a former Clinton advisor, and a bloke called Andrew Stein, who’s a former New York democratic official, they say she will run for President in 2020.

You’re sitting there thinking ‘You’ve got to be kidding, is that the best they can come up with?’

She won’t be in early, apparently, because the Democrats have got to come up with a couple of credible candidates.

I don’t know who they are. Thye should have had them already. Two years out, you should have a couple of names in the mix where people are starting to think ‘Oh yeah, fair enough’.

That bloke in Texas who ran against Cruz, he could be one.

But at the latter point of the race, Clinton will go ‘I’m back’. And at that point, everyone’s supposed to go ‘Wooo!’

Now, I was as alarmed as you are.

If you support Trump, it’s a lay down with Nazir. If Hillary stands up and says I’m going to run again in 2020, say goodnight nurse now.

However, it’s not without precedent. People who have won a nomination and gone and lost and gone back and got another nomination, go as follows:

Richard Nixon; ultimately he didn’t work out well in the end but he still got there. Adlai Stevenson, Thomas Dewey, Williams Jenning Brian – Winston’s favourite, Henry Clay, William Henry Harrison, and Thomas Jefferson.

They all got nominated a second time, and of course some of them went on to become President. So what she is potentially looking to do has been done before.

Yet Trump’s advisor Kellyanne Conway tweeted in reaction to the news ‘Dear god, please yes’, and that’s probably the feeling amongst the White House.
