Mark the Week: Australian vegans are out of control

Every Friday morning, Mike Hosking takes you through the big ticket items of the week and lets you know what he makes of it all.

Here's a taste of what he reckons.

Daylight saving: 4/10. I miss the lighter evenings.

Deciles: 7/10. As in schools and the revelation, deciles are futile. It's the parents and the teachers and the dedication that counts not the postcode.

Kiwibuild: 2/10 You wonder if the bad news will ever end. This week, it's not 70-something houses at all, it's 30 something given most of them were merely re-stickered.

Uber: 4/10. Self-driving they say is coming. No…time…soon. Yet another 2020 prediction that never came close to coming true.

Australian vegans: 2/10. No one loves a fanatic and the nuttier you are, the less likely you are to sway people your way. Not a hard concept to grasp I wouldn't have thought.

Jack Salt: 9/10 another kiwi flying the flag and living his dream internationally …an NCAA win is more than most kids could ever believe possible.

The Warriors: 7/10. If we play the way we did against the Titans. This...is…our...year.

Tax Justice Aotearoa: 2/10.  The 10 people at the launch told you all you needed to know about how popular redistribution is.

The Gun Buyback: 6/10. Because it's tangible and it's been done with cross-party co-operation rarely seen. But to what end? Have we really changed anything? And we still don’t have a clue about the cost.

The Census: 1/10. What is it they say about government departments?

The Black Hole: 8/10. A reminder of how little and insignificant we really are.

Brexit: 0/10. The neverending British tragedy with any number of disastrous figures and catastrophic mistakes. It is one of Europe's great triumphs. No one will ever vote to leave again.

The Black Pearl Café in Palmy: 7/10. Advertising for young people and in doing so breaking the law. You know what? Laws only work if they're sensible. If you want to hire a young person, you will.

The Australian election: 7/10. All elections are fun, but sadly this is a foregone conclusion.
