The Trade and Export Growth Minister is moving to reassure farmers the best soil won't be built on.

A report prepared for Horticulture NZ found the prices could rise by as much as 58 per cent by 2043 if central and local government policies stop new vegetables growing in the country.

David Parker is meeting with horticulturalists in Pukekohe today to hear their concerns.

He told Mike Hosking they have made moves to protect elite soils.

"They need land subdivided, but it should be done on less valuable soils."
