The Government wants a national register for all firearms, tighter restrictions on who can get and retain a firearms licence, and a ban on visitors to New Zealand from buying any guns.

The Acting Prime Minister told Mike Hosking in the face of the Christchurch mosque shootings and mayhem all over the world, a gun register is important.

"I am definitely for a gun register. I think it will cost a lot less than what people are predicting."

Peters says the government is sending out a clear signal to the public by taking a strict approach.

“What we are saying is, don’t try and dodge this law, otherwise we will come and get you. We have to make this as clear as daylight.

“We don’t know how many guns we have in New Zealand. When we have finished this amnesty, we are going to confront those and say, you have got three months to come clean. But we are not going to give up on this.”
