If we want to fix education we need to scrap National Standards.

This from an education expert ahead of the second day of the NZEI conference in Rotorua.

Welby Ings said teachers are forced to spend more time measuring children's progress than on improving their learning.

He said kids aren't going to fit into National Standards because they all think and learn differently.

Dr Ings told Larry Williams comparative testing isn't useful and we need to change the balance.

"Instead of sending home reports, if you get the opportunity to sit down and talk with a teacher they can give you a far, far richer picture."
