Northland District police: $1000 fines for those flouting the border rules

People who break the rules at the Auckland/Northland checkpoints can expect to be slapped with a thousand dollar fine.

Fully vaccinated police and iwi are pulling every car over at Uretiti on State Highway 1 and Maungaturoto on State Highway 12, but that may change if it gets too busy.

Northland District Police commander, Tony Hill, told Mike Yardley only one person has turned up at the border without evidence of double vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test.

“If people turn up and are in blatant disregard of the rules and quite obviously don’t care about them, then they’ll get the thousand dollar fine coming their way.”

Tony Hill says most people in Northland are vaccinated but there's poor health and housing in the region so the spread of Covid would be very detrimental.
