A finding that will surprise no one - particularly no woman.

Media coverage and research of women's sport is lacking, compared to men's.

The Massey University study used the Silver Ferns as a case study.

Former captains and coaches from 1960 to 2015 were interviewed about their time on the team.

Study author Lana McCarthy told Mike Hosking the research is just as important as media coverage.

"Then we can see what has actually been happening, where we are lacking in and then it's important we go back to these sports and say; 'hey, look, we do need some more media coverage, this is why, this is important'," she said.

The findings will be made into a book that's set to be released next year.
