Game developers claim they're being hard done by when it comes to subsidies that go to film - but not interactive media.

The New Zealand Production Grant stumps up cash rebates for productions here.

Projects such as the Lord of the Rings television show are eligible for a sizeable grant, but game developers say they can't access the same support.

Stephen Knightly, a board member of the New Zealand Games Developers Association, told Mike Hosking that they are all part of the screen and creative industries, and all work for the same Hollywood organisations.

"We employ the same people. All the people doing visual effects for film and TV, they also come and work for us."

He believes that the process is happening that there will be an economic creative plan for the creative industries, which would benefit gaming.

"We believe we can become a billion dollar part of the screen sector in a few more years."
