The Government's plan to fight anti-bacterial resistance is underway, with a collaboration between the Ministries of Health and Primary Industries.

It'll focus on what bugs are already in the country and how they're being treated to establish why some are becoming resistant to medication.

Auckland University Microbiologist Siouxsie Wiles told Mike Hosking we also need to address the over-prescribing of some medications.

"That's quite clear from a lot of this research and even just using not the right antibiotics when they should be used."
